POSITION SUMMARY

The Medical Billing Specialist works under close supervision to submit daily medical bills, track and follow up on outstanding claims, receive payments and provide collection of outstanding patient debts. This position manages a database that includes updating patient information, provide billing statements, past due statements, and a mechanism for notifying of past due accounts. Enter patient encounters in RPMS, provide backup documentation for grant/contracts, assist with Health and Wellness and Finance departments' filing as needed, and provide overall support for the medical billing manager and related programs. Ensure security and confidentiality of medical records information and maintain advanced familiarity with medical terminology. This is an hourly, non-exempt position that reports to the Medical Billing Manager.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Identify and resolve billing issues by interfacing with insurance companies and appealing denied claims as needed.
  • Manage complex patient accounts payable/receivable database to ensure the timely payment of patient accounts.
  • Track and follow up on outstanding and past due patient accounts. Assist patients with payment plan or determine if referral to collections is needed. Identify and resolve patient billing complaints.
  • Assist daily with processing fee tickets from medical providers to maintain revenue for Health and Wellness departments. Accurately bill insurance companies and post payments received.
  • Read and analyze patient records. Determine the correct codes for patient records. Interact with providers to ensure accuracy.
  • Maintain and update patient information files. Enter data into RPMS.
  • Reviews patient accounts for possible assignment and referral to Medical Billing Manager and Health and Wellness Officer for follow up.
  • Assist supervisor with reports, past due research and documentation including other requests as needed.
  • Assist with program planning, policy development, Medicaid outreach and referral and/or interagency coordination related to Medicaid and non-Medicaid covered services.
  • Communicate with tact and discretion while maintaining a high level of confidentiality in line with HIPAA and related regulations and policies.
  • Perform backup administrative duties for medical billing as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • One or more years' work experience in medical billing, coding, and collection practices (ICD-10 and CPT) required.
  • Knowledge of basic medical coding, medical terminology, credentialing processes, and third-party operating procedures and practices required. Certified Medical Coder preferred.
  • Strong problem solving skills, particularly regarding medical billing regulatory obligations. Strong organizational skills and accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to monitor and prioritize workload and meet strict deadlines.
  • Excellent customer service skills and written and verbal communication. Demonstrated ability to communicate with diverse populations in a courteous, helpful, and clearly understood manner.
  • Knowledge of Native cultures, history, and traditions preferred.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and use tact and discretion.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs. Experience with RPMS preferred.
  • Ability to type 50 wpm required; 10-key by touch required.
  • Must be able to pass random and pre-employment drug screening.
  • Must pass background check.
